A group of activists have staged a protest at Scottish Power’s headquarters in Glasgow over rising energy prices.

On Tuesday, members of protest group The Scottish Resistance entered the reception area of the building on St Vincent Street.

It comes amid increasing concern over the cost-of-living across the UK.

A price cap rise of 81% is being anticipated in October, taking the typical household bill to £3,582 per year.

There is then expected to be a further rise from January, 2023, by 19% taking costs to £4,266 per year.

A separate protest is due to be held outside the Scottish Power HQ in Glasgow city centre on Friday.

A meeting hosted by the UK Government focusing on the cost of living has been scheduled to take place in September.

However, there has been calls for discussions to be brought forward due to the urgency of the crisis.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wrote to Prime Minister Boris Johnson urging him to hold an emergency meeting to look at what steps can be taken to address the issue.

Sturgeon warned Johnson that many people across the UK “simply cannot afford to wait” until September for further action.

Former prime minister Gordon Brown has also raised his concerns over the crisis.

Speaking on Monday, Brown warned that people “will go hungry and cold” when energy prices rise again.

Brown has argued that if the UK Parliament is not recalled, then emergency meetings should be held in order to focus on the issue.
