Almost £100,000 has been raised to cover the cost of the repatriation and funeral of a Rangers fan who died during an away trip to Turkey.
Christopher Potter travelled to Istanbul ahead of the Glasgow club’s clash with Fenerbahce in the Europa League.
The dad passed away after a road traffic accident in the Turkish city.
Following the incident, a GoFundMe was set up to help cover repatriation costs and his funeral.
Since launching, almost £100,000 has been raised, with Rangers captain James Tavernier and goalkeeper Jack Butland donating £500.
Glasgow businessman and fellow Rangers fan Andy Smillie donated £10,000.
The fundraiser, set up by friend Daryl Mckernan, reads: “As everybody is aware Christopher Potter was tragically killed while away watching his beloved Rangers. Let’s try and get some money together to help with any costs needed for his funeral or getting him home or just to help his wife and kids.
“Let’s dig deep all donations will be greatly appreciated.”
Following the incident, Rangers took to social media to pay tribute.
“We are devastated to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul.
“The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
“We are remaining in constant contact with both the Turkish and British authorities over this tragic incident.”
Fenerbahce added: “We extend our deepest condolences to Rangers FC and the entire Rangers community
“We are deeply saddened to receive the heartbreaking news that a Rangers FC supporter, who traveled to Istanbul to support his team in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 against our club Fenerbahce, has tragically lost his life in a traffic accident.
“Our heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to his family, Rangers FC, and their community.”
A spokesperson from the UK foreign office said: “We are aware of the death of a British man in Turkey and are in touch with the local authorities.”
