Application to make Glasgow park firework free zone rejected by council

An application to make a public park in Glasgow a firework free zone has been rejected by the local authority.

A council panel reviewed 13 applications for firework bans across the city before Pollokshields was declared the first control zone.

The announcement means the use of fireworks, excluding sparklers, will be banned in the area from November 1 to November 10, in public and private spaces such as gardens.

Pollokshields was deemed to be the area of the city that had suffered the most “firework-related anti-social behaviour” by the panel.

An application lodged by those representing Alexandra Park was among those rejected.

The local authority confirmed the decision to green light the Pollokshields control zone and reject the move for a firework ban in the East End park was based on “crime data and council complaints statistics.”

Despite the rejection, a review of the Alexandra Park application can be requested.

A council spokeswoman said: “A panel consisting of Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue and the council considered all the applications. Each decision was based on crime data and council complaints statistics.

“Unsuccessful applicants can request a review. We would also like to highlight the public consultation on the creation of a future citywide Firework Control Zone. It is now live on the council’s Consultation Hub.”

A six week public consultation into whether a city-wide ban should be introduced was launched on Tuesday, September 10.
