Armed robber wearing wig tackled by customers during Glasgow Post Office raid

An armed robber who donned a wig during a Post Office raid was tackled by brave customers.

Asheque Patwary carried out the attack at the shop on Dyke Road, Knightswood, Glasgow on December 12, 2022.

The 38-year-old struck just two hours after he held up a bank in the southside of the city.

Prosecutor Chris McIntosh told the High Court in Glasgow how Patwary had pushed his way behind the counter at the post office and brandished a metal cosh in a plastic bag at a female worker.

Mr McIntosh said: “He demanded money and threatened to shoot her.

“She refused to give him any money, so he approached the till.”

Patwary grabbed cash, bundled some of it into a bag and tried to make a getaway.

But customers waiting in a queue held the door shut.

Mr McIntosh said: “One struggled with him and noticed that there was a knife sticking out of the waistband of his trousers, which he grabbed and gave to another customer.”

The female worker took hold of the cosh and Patwary then tried to escape via a roof hatch.

The advocate depute said: “He was pulled down and restrained until police arrived.”

Police arrived and discovered Patwary still pinned down by a customer.

He made one final failed bid for freedom as he was hauled out of the shop.

The court heard Patwary was found with £1,470 in his trouser pocket.

The bag he had used to stuff some of the loot into was found still at the post office.

It had another £6,100 as well as 2,000 Euros inside.

At around 1.35pm that day, Patwary had earlier robbed a TSB branch in Kilmarnock Road in the city’s Shawlands.

Carrying a rucksack and again wearing a wig, he grabbed a bank worker by the arm while wielding a knife.

He eventually got his hands on £240 before escaping.

Patwary pled guilty to carrying out the two assault and robberies.

It emerged he had previously been locked up for the same offence in 2019.
