A man has been charged in connection with a £31,000 fraud scheme after an 85-year-old was targeted in Bearsden.

Police say they received a report about an 85-year-old potential victim of bogus workmen around noon on Thursday.

Officers attended the Ferguston Road area, and a 26-year-old man was arrested in connection.

He was charged and is due to appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Friday.

Police say enquiries are ongoing.

Detective Chief Inspector David Bell said: “Targeting elderly people at home is a despicable crime and our enquiries are ongoing.

“Be suspicious of anyone arriving unannounced at your door. Householders should ensure that doors are secure, even when at home and use a door chain. Do not let anyone in until you are certain of who they are, or who they claim to represent.

“Neighbours should look out for one another – particularly if they have elderly or vulnerable neighbours. Report any suspicious activity to us.”
