Art School land to become new pedestrian ‘avenue’

The 25-year lease of the former Stow College site will allow pedestrians and cyclists to travel between the city centre and west end.

Land will be rented from Glasgow School of Art to create a new pedestrian ‘avenue’.

The 25-year lease of the former Stow College site – expected to cost the city council £1 per year – will allow walkers and cyclists to easily travel between the city centre and west end.

Argyle Street: The project is part of a £115m Avenues programme.

The Underline Avenue project, part of a £115m programme funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, will see improvements along Cambridge Street all the way to St George’s Road, passing Cowcaddens subway station and New City Road.

Work on the former college site will allow a link between St George’s Cross and Cowcaddens.

The council said it was “key to the delivery of the most direct and continuous route for the Underline Avenue”.

Sauchiehall Street: The work is proposed to begin in January 2022.

Work on the Underline Avenue – which will also feature environmental improvements – is proposed to begin in January 2022, with completion in the summer of 2023.

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said: “A core benefit of the Avenues programme is how it will improve connections across the city centre, with the Underline transforming how people can travel to and from the city centre and the west end.

“This is the next step in the delivery of the Underline, which will create a far more attractive environment for everyone who uses this route or lives, studies or works on it.”
