Train station closed due to 'unsafe conditions' months after hotel fire

Ayr railway station has been closed due to “unsafe conditions” months after a historic hotel was gutted in a fire.

The blaze extensively damaged the southern section of the Ayr Station Hotel building in September.

South Ayrshire Council assessed the structure and safety works got under way in October.

However, on Tuesday, December 19, ScotRail confirmed the station has been closed with the operator unable to run its shuttle train between Prestwick Town and Ayr due to unsafe conditions.

Station Bridge Road was closed until further notice, but had been due to reopen this week.

ScotRail said a bus shuttle between Ayr and Prestwick Town had been resintated.

It departs Ayr at 25 and 55 min past the hour, and Prestwick at 25 and 55 min past the hour.

A spokesperson for ScotRail said: “Due to current weather conditions at Ayr, the station is closed and we cannot run our shuttle train between Prestwick Town and Ayr.

“We have reintroduced a bus shuttle running half-hourly between Ayr and Prestwick Town.

“Customers are advised that they should check their journey before travelling, and keep an eye on our website, app, or social media feeds for live updates.”

Two teenagers, aged 17 and 13, were arrested and charged in connection with the incident – the second time the hotel was set alight this year.
