Police in Ayrshire are urging residents to be on high alert following a recent surge in incidents involving bogus workmen targeting vulnerable members of the community.

Between June and September, four homeowners were defrauded by a man posing as a plumber. Victims handed over sums ranging from £130 to £5,540 for repair work that was never carried out.

Officers say they are following a “positive line of enquiry” to trace the suspect.

In a separate incident on Monday, September 1, in Kilmaurs, two bogus workers attended the home of a 71-year-old woman and took payment for gardening services that were left unfinished and of poor quality. Police enquiries into the matter are ongoing.

Another serious incident occurred on Thursday, October 23, when an 83-year-old woman in Bonnyton was approached at her door by a man claiming to be carrying out maintenance work.

She was robbed of her purse and phone. A 40-year-old man has since been arrested and charged in connection with the crime.

Chief Inspector Stuart Dougan condemned the behaviour, describing the targeting of elderly residents as “a despicable crime”.

He said: “In recent weeks, we have seen around one report each week of a bogus workman attending and trying to obtain money from often elderly members of the community.

“This type of offending is often under-reported, with residents fearful or embarrassed to tell their family or police. I want to reassure the community that there is nothing to be ashamed of – these individuals are experts at manipulation and can apply incredible pressure to get what they want.”

He urged householders to be cautious of anyone arriving unannounced, keep doors locked even when at home, and use door chains. “Do not let anyone in until you are certain of who they are, or who they claim to represent,” he added.

“We take all reports very seriously and will investigate them fully. It is important that you do not hand over significant amounts of money on the promise of work being carried out in the future.”

Police continue to investigate all reported incidents and are asking anyone with concerns to contact them.
