A body has been found on the shore of a popular tourist spot in Galloway prompting a police investigation.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the incident near the shore of Mull of Galloway on Monday morning
Coastguard crews were called to assist in the incident, located at Scotland’s most southernly point, from around 4am on Monday.
Police now say they are treating the death as “unexplained” while the lighthouse has been closed to visitors as a result of emergency services conducting investigations.
In a statement, Mull of Galloway visitor website stated: “Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Mull of Galloway and Gallie Craig will be closed all day.
“We apologise for the inconvenience.”
A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson said: “HM Coastguard supported Police Scotland in response to an incident by the cliffs near the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse on Monday.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5.40am on Monday, August 7, 2023, the body of a man was discovered at the shore at Mull of Galloway.
“The death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.
“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
