A man claiming to be doing plumbing work entered an elderly woman’s home and stole her handbag.
At around 3pm on Tuesday, the bogus tradesman attended the property in the Castlepark area of Irvine, North Ayrshire.
He told the victim he was there to do work on her water system but once inside he took her bag and made off.
Detective constable Robbie McIntosh, of Saltcoats CID, said: “This is an appalling crime that targeted an elderly woman.”
He said officers were keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a man acting suspiciously in the area.
“These criminals are often extremely plausible and we are asking people in the community to be on their guard and be aware of bogus workmen in the area,” DC McIntosh said.
“I would advise the local community to be vigilant when approached by anyone offering this kind of work. Always ask for credentials and never hand over money upfront. If you are not sure about the price they are charging consider getting a second opinion.
“If you think anyone is being targeted by bogus workmen or have any concerns please contact us or speak to an officer direct.”
Police Scotland said it appeared to be an isolated incident.
Anyone who can assist with information has been asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1897 of March 1, or make a call anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
