Bus firm on alert after driver dies from coronavirus

A bus driver has died from Covid-19 and a number of other workers at the same depot have tested positive for the virus.

Stagecoach West Scotland said control measures have been put in place at its Kilmarnock site in East Ayrshire, but stated there has been no evidence of workplace transmission amongst those affected.

Bosses paid tribute to Willie Wallace, who passed away at the weekend after more than 30 years with the company.

A spokesperson said: “The thoughts of everyone at Stagecoach are with the family and friends of our driver, Willie Wallace, who sadly passed away over the weekend.

“Willie, who started at Kilmarnock depot in 1987, was a well-loved and hugely popular driver at Kilmarnock depot, and had a pleasant word and a smile for everyone.

“He leaves behind many friends at Stagecoach, as well as his beloved two daughters and four grandchildren and other family and friends.

“We are doing all we can to support his loved ones at this time.”

The firm said the safety and wellbeing of its employees and customers was its “first priority” and strict protocols have been put in place in regards to the management of the virus.

The spokesperson added: “We currently have a small number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 amongst our employees in Kilmarnock which are not linked and there is no evidence of workplace transmission.

“We are taking all the necessary steps and following the health authority protocols to manage this.

“We are continuing extensive and ongoing communication with our employees and constructive engagement and relationship with our union representatives.

“We will continue to follow all of the government and health organisation rules and guidance in place to manage the virus.”
