Car parking could go as council considers bus only corridors through Glasgow

A consultation on how to improve the main bus routes across Glasgow closes on Wednesday.

Five bus corridors would be created from the centre out to Bearsden, Clydebank, Paisley and Giffnock.

Special junctions and bus only lanes could be put in place along the routes.

Roadside parking could also be removed in order to streamline the journey for commuters.

“We want to identify along these routes what the key pinch-points are,” said councillor Angus Millar.

“We want to hear from people who use buses and people who would like to use buses to give us feedback of their experience of places along those routes as to how we might be able to improve them.”

The first five corridors being considered are:

Paisley Road West; (Glasgow Central Station to Paisley Gilmour Street Station)
Dumbarton Road; (Clydebank Railway Station to High Street Station)
Maryhill Road; (Bearsden Cross and From Boclair Road via Canniesburn Toll to Glasgow Central Station)
Great Western Road; (Kilbowie Roundabout to High Street) and
Pollokshaws Road (Glasgow Central Station to Shawlands then Pollokshaws Road to Thornliebank Railway Station and Kilmarnock Road to Eastwood Toll).

The five main routes are not only key for travel, but are also busy areas for a range of businesses and any upgrades may see significant changes for firms and their customers.

“The majority of our clients drive, they use the parking bays and they use the Ringo [parking app]. If that goes it’s going to be chaotic,” said Martine Carroll, owner of Kroma Glasgow.

She and her business partner Jody Ciplinski own two hair salons, one at either end of Great Western Road.

“For the city it’s good for bike and bus lanes, but for our business it’s not going to be very good.”

This is just the first stage of plans and councillor Angus Millar, the city’s transport convenor, said “there is no one size fits all” solution to all of the main routes.

Responses have to be in by August 31. Once initial comments have been gathered they will be sent to expert design teams to come up with ideas, the council said.
