A car thief who asked a mechanic to fix a stolen vehicle while on the run from the police has been jailed for 15 months.

Darren Stack, 29, stole the Nissan Juke from a property in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, on April 19 2025.

Stack later attended a garage and requested that the car’s flat tyre be fixed after officers had been informed about the theft.

Stack then raced off in the damaged vehicle after the mechanic asked him to wait for the car to be repaired.

He went on to damage another vehicle and offered the car owner cash for him to repair the scratch to his door.

Stack pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to housebreaking, theft and dangerous driving.

The court heard that a woman discovered that her handbag, car key and her vehicle were missing from her home.

She contacted the police who later informed her that her business cards and handbag had been found.

Stack later attended a Kwik Fit garage in Glasgow.

Prosecutor Jacky Wall said: “He asked the mechanic if he could fix the punctured tyre for cash.

“He was told to leave the car for a short while but he re-entered the vehicle and drove at speed to Fenwick Road and to Giffnock train station with the flat tyre.

“Stack entered the car park at excessive speed.”

Stack – who hit a dead end – reversed at speed and struck a Mercedes Sprinter which caused a scratch to the front door.

Stack then spoke to the car’s owner and offered him cash to repair the damage.

He went on to reverse at speed again out of the car park.

The vehicle was found abandoned by the police, who were able to get a description of Stack.

Officers discovered Stack walking away from the vehicle and found him to smell of alcohol.

A police system check found him to be a disqualified driver.

When told by Sheriff Barry Divers that there was no alternative to a custodial sentence, Stack replied: “Fair enough.”

Stack was also disqualified from driving for 27 months.
