Care home worker struck off after 'assaulting and neglecting' residents

A care home worker has been struck off the register after assaulting three residents under his care.

David Brown was employed as a social care worker in Glasgow and was found guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court on June 20, 2025, of mistreating vulnerable individuals under his care.

The Scottish Social Services Council said he assaulted one resident and subjected two others to ‘ill-treatment or wilful neglect’ in incidents over three dates.

The SSSC wrote in a report: “Social service workers should not abuse, harm or exploit individuals in their care. In your capacity as a care worker, you assaulted and ill-treated three residents in the care home you were working in. In doing so, you grossly breached the trust placed in you by residents, their families and your employer.

“The residents who were the subject of the ill treatment were put at risk of serious physical and emotional harm. The behaviour which you have been convicted of could cause emotional and/or physical harm if it was to be repeated. The behaviour is fundamentally incompatible with that expected of a caring professional.

The SSSC imposed a removal order on his registration, adding that a warning “would not be appropriate due to the extremely serious nature of the behaviour of which you have been convicted”.

“The behaviour is highly serious”, the report added.

“The nature of the behaviour raises significant concerns about your character and values. It demonstrates an abuse of power against vulnerable residents in a place where they should feel safe and cared for. The potential for risk of harm to victims is high given the nature of the convictions which amount to significant abuse.

“The behaviour occurred on at least three separate dates, and this shows a pattern of behaviour. You have not demonstrated insight, regret or apology. To treat residents in this manner as a care worker indicates underlying value issues.”

The notice came into effect on April 19, 2026.
