Cat’s tail cut off, others seriously injured in North Ayrshire

An investigation has been launched after a cat had its tail cut off and a number of others were seriously injured in the same area of North Ayrshire.

Several pets suffered facial injures, whilst another arrived home covered in bleach.

The Scottish SPCA said it is probing the “suspicious circumstances” surrounding the incidents after a concerned pet owner called its helpline on June 18.

The animal welfare charity said it doesn’t know if the incidents – in the Auchengate area of Irvine – are linked.

“This has been an incredibly upsetting and stressful time for the owners of the cats and we would like to get to the bottom of what has happened,” Scottish SPCA chief inspector Laura McIntyre said.

“This will have been incredibly traumatic for the cats involved.”

Chief inspector McIntyre added: “Anyone using any method to cause injury on purpose is committing an offence and is punishable by law.”

Meanwhile, the body of a cat was discovered on a stretch of beach between Broughty Ferry in Dundee and Monifeith in Angus.

The male tabby, who was not microchipped or neutered, was found at around 10.20am last Thursday.

Investigating officers believe he was between five and seven-years-old, and had recently visited the vet as he had a shaved patch on his leg.

Scottish SPCA inspector Alastair Adams said: “We are unsure of the circumstances that led to the animal being on the beach.

“If anyone has any information about who the cat belonged to or how he came to be on the beach, please contact our animal helpline.”

If you have any information that could help either investigation, call the Scottish SPCA’s confidential animal helpline on 03000 999 999.
