A Celtic fan held by police for shouting at Hearts supporters assaulted a sergeant and was caught with a knife.

Rohan Sohal, 25, attacked the police officer at Celtic Park on September 14, 2024.

Celtic hosted the Edinburgh side in a game which they won 2-0.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that season ticket holder Sohal was noted to be under the influence of alcohol by the police.

Prosecutor Ross Gunn said: “He swore and was roaring towards the away fans.”

Police officers and stewards attempted to engage with Sohal, of Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, and warned him about his conduct.

Mr Gunn stated: “Police officers tried to re-engage with Sohal and he struck the sergeant to the right arm with his hand.”

Sohal was removed from the stadium and was later searched.

A black handled lock back knife was recovered from his left jacket pocket.

In reply to a caution and charge, Sohal said: “I did push the guy’s hand away.”

Sohal pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to the assault.

He also admitted a separate charge of having a knife in Celtic Park without a reasonable excuse or lawful authority.

Sohal’s lawyer told the court that his client was “utterly ashamed” and that he had the blade on him as he attended the match after he finished working opening boxes.

Sheriff Thomas Ward fined Sohal £715 and banned him from all football matches at home or abroad for one year.

The sheriff remarked: “Think of the money he will save not paying for a season ticket.”
