Celtic’s largest shareholder has held talks with Robbie Keane over the vacant manager role and is due to discuss the job with Martin O’Neill later this week, STV Sport understands.
Dermot Desmond has narrowed down the shortlist to the former Hoops striker and the temporary boss who led the Glasgow side to a cup double last season.
Keane, who resigned from Hungarian side Ferencvaros after a second place finish last season, has already met with Desmond to discuss the possibility of stepping into the dugout at Celtic Park.
Desmond is also due to meet O’Neill this week, not long after the Northern Irishman sealed a nail-biting league title on the final day of the season and a dominant Scottish Cup win whilst acting as interim manager, to discuss the potential of returning to the club permanently.
It is understood a final decision on who will be leading Celtic into next season could be made by the end of the week.
