Charity serves up one million meals during lockdown

A charity has donated a record 422 tonnes of food – equivalent to more than one million meals – to vulnerable people and families since the start of the coronavirus lockdown.

FareShare Glasgow and The West of Scotland has more than doubled its distribution of surplus supermarket stock to help stop people going hungry during the crisis.

The majority of food has been turned into parcels or home-cooked meals and delivered door-to-door.

Donations: The charity has been helping the most vulnerable.

Working with organisations that support the vulnerable, the charity said coronavirus has hit people in need hard.

Despite marking the one-million meals milestone, FareShare Glasgow and The West of Scotland does not plan to stop there.

Director of operations, Jim Burns, told STV News: “We’re extremely proud to have distributed so much good food to organisations feeding people in need.

“The past eight weeks has seen a record number of charities requesting to join our network, with our numbers swelling from 90 to 235 members.

“From children’s breakfast clubs to homeless hostels, we’re providing food to be turned into meals for people who are at the biggest risk of going hungry during the pandemic.

“One million meal portions is an incredible achievement for us, but we won’t stop there.

“Our team of staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to continue providing food to the hundreds of charities across Scotland supporting the most vulnerable people in our communities during the crisis.”

Charities and community groups interested in accessing food can contact the FareShare Glasgow and the West of Scotland warehouse on 0141 958 1133
