Popeyes has opened it’s 50th UK store and the first in Glasgow after excited diners queued up for a day to be in with the chance of earning free food for a year.
The New Orleans-inspired fast food outlet opened it’s first Scottish store in Barrhead in September 2023 with fried chicken enthusiasts queuing up for over 18 hours.
But the opening of a store in Glasgow’s city centre on Friday saw queues building up 23 hours before the shop opened, with the first three customers in line earning free chicken sandwiches for a year.
Subhan and Zubair Mohammed, a pair of friends, were two of the first to arrive after queuing overnight to get their hands on a chicken sandwich.
Zubair said: “Subhan sent me the Instagram post with the details of the opening and we really wanted to be the first in the queue.
“We originally planned to come for 6am but saw how early people queued in Barrhead so decided to head down the day before and we’re so glad we did.
“The sandwich was definitely worth the wait.”
The first 50 to join the queue, met with a brass band to mark the opening, were hoping to win merch including limited-edition pairs of sneakers branded with Popeyes orange, teal and white colours.
The shoes were created by local artists at BoxFresh Glasgow, and press on nails were also made available from a city nail salon called Naf.
Tom Crowley, CEO at Popeyes UK, said: “Scottish chicken lovers have continued show their support, and they certainly rose to the challenge to celebrate our 50th UK opening with incredible energy, queueing for an unbelievable 23 hours before we opened the doors.”
The restaurant and takeaway is situated at 108-110 Sauchiehall Street and seats up to 80 people.
