Chris Hoy: I was overwhelmed at first Tour de 4, it's great to be back again

Sir Chris Hoy says he was “overwhelmed with emotion” at the inaugural Tour de 4 last year and can’t wait to be back again in Glasgow on Sunday.

Sir Chris was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer in 2023 and a year later was told it was terminal.

This year’s Tour de 4 will follow a similar format to last year with participants setting off from the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and choosing between routes over different distances.

The event raised more than £2m last year with the likes of Andy Murray and Duncan Scott joining Hoy on the bike ride.

Fundraising this year will support five major UK cancer charities – Breast Cancer Now, Cure Leukaemia, Macmillan Cancer Support, Maggie’s and Prostate Cancer UK – with all general donations being split equally between the five.

Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave and his wife Lady Ann Redgrave, former Scotland rugby star Kenny Logan and astronaut Tim Peake will also represent Prostate Cancer UK at the event.

Ahead of this year’s event, speaking about last year, he told STV News: “It was very emotional but maybe not in the way I thought it would be.

“To be surrounded by thousands of people in a similar situation or families in a similar situation to ours, I thought it might be difficult to cope with.

“The emotions were joy, happiness, and celebration.

“I remember standing on the stage when we announced the total raised and looking out across the sea of faces, seeing the smiles and the positivity, it was really overwhelming.

“It was remarkable to see in the space of one day, what this group of people had collectively created, it was wonderful.

“It’s great to be back again and the number of people who have kept in contact since last year, friendships that have been made in that one day.

“To have this day that has a purpose for people to train towards, to have an exciting day in the calendar to aim towards.

“When you’ve got scans, blood tests and doctors’ appointments and all sorts going on, it’s wonderful to have nice things to look forward to.”
