Christmas light display keeps George Square shining

Each year the Christmas light switch-on in George Square is one of the most popular events in Glasgow during the festive period.

Thousands normally descend upon the city centre to watch the spectacle, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the city to cancel the event.

Despite this, the lights are still shining in Glasgow to spread festive cheer to those in the city.

Events Management Company, 21CC devised a light installation which shines on the City Chambers, changing colour and shooting lasers into the sky.

Geoff Crow told STV News: “There are over 350 fixtures which produce over just under 20,000 LED chips.

“The sky trackers on some nights can be visible around the entire city of Glasgow and Greater Glasgow.

“We have worked so hard this year to try and make something really special for Scotland and Glasgow and the reaction we have been getting online, and in person, has been absolutely fantastic.”

Depute leader of Glasgow City Council, David McDonald, added: “This is a safe environment for people to come to. There’s plenty of space to socially distance.

“We were conscious people still wanted a Christmas experience in Glasgow so, if you live in the area, you can come here and enjoy the Christmas lights.”
