A popular bakery and café company in Glasgow’s West End has secured permission to open one of its venues until 11pm.

The city’s licensing board has approved an application from the firm behind Cottonrake Café – at 717 Great Western Road – to serve alcohol until late.

It comes after planning permission to extend the opening hours from 8am to 8pm to 8am to 11pm was granted earlier this year.

Cottonrake Café has a day menu and an evening menu, which has a range of small plate options and is accompanied by a cocktail and wine list.

A letter, submitted to Glasgow City Council as part of the planning application, stated: “The premises are on a section of Great Western Road that contains long-established eating, drinking and music venues.

“To the west, and in the same tenement block, there is Cail Bruich, which is open in the evenings, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 6.30pm to 12am.

“Immediately to the west of Cail Bruich, there is Òran Mór, an arts and entertainment venue with live music, restaurants and an auditorium. Òran Mór is open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 11am to 2am and on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3am.

“Great Western Road itself is a busy thoroughfare that carries a significant amount of vehicular traffic until late into the evening.

“Given this context, it is not considered that the variation of the condition being required would have any discernible adverse impact on the residential amenities of the occupiers of the flatted properties in the tenement block.”

Licensing lawyer Audrey Junner, representing Cottonrake, said the company had originally secured an alcohol licence in August last year.

“At that time, we were restricted to applying for the licensed hours in line with planning permission,” she added.

“Since then, we have been fortunate enough to be granted planning permission for later hours.”
