A dead kitten was discovered in an emaciated state covered in faeces after being abandoned in woodland in North Lanarkshire.
The kitten was found in an open wicker basket in the woodland undergrowth of the Foulburn Road area in Shotts on Thursday.
A grey blanket and a soft toy were also found in the basket.
The Scottish SPCA said the kitten, believed to be female, had been left with some cold meat that “tragically became lodged in her throat”.
The Scottish SPCA is urging people who can no longer look after animals to get in touch rather than abandon them.
Scottish SPCA inspector Steph McCrossan said: “We cannot stress enough that there is no excuse for abandoning an animal. There are always other options available.”
A spokesperson for Scottish SPCA said: “If anyone recognises this kitten or has any information about her circumstances, please call our confidential animal helpline at 03000 999 999.”
