'Devastated' family pay tribute to 'remarkable son' at candlelit vigil

Amen Teklay died on Wednesday night after being found seriously injured in Glasgow.

Family and friends have come together to hold a vigil in remembrance of a schoolboy who died on a street in Glasgow earlier this week.

Amen Teklay was found seriously injured on Clarendon Street in the city at around 10.30pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services attended however the 15-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Scotland launched a major investigation and said they were treating the death as murder following a post-mortem.

Sunday’s memorial came as police confirmed a 14-year-old boy has been charged in connection with Amen’s death. He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

A 15-year-old boy has also been arrested in connection with the incident and police said enquiries were ongoing.

On Sunday, the First Minister told STV News he was “saddened” to learn of the teenager’s death and that his thoughts were with Amen’s family.

Swinney said: “I’m deeply saddened by the death of Amen, a fine young man who has lost his life.

“Obviously there is a live police investigation under way and I would want to express my sympathies to Amen’s family and to reflect on the suffering that they have experienced by the loss of a fine young man.”

Those who knew and loved the teenager gathered at a football pitch on Sunday afternoon to pay tribute to Amen, who loved playing football, pizza nights and taking part in summer barbecues.

Amen’s father and extended family attended the event, joined by several hundred others. Prayers were led by faith leaders and candles were lit during a service that lasted more than an hour.

Friends also gathered to let off a collection of blue balloons in memory of the teen.

Community worker Jamie O’Neill, speaking on behalf of Amen’s dad, read a heartfelt message from the grieving father, who thanked locals for their support.

Mr O’Neill read: “We are gathered today in sorrow, mourning the tragic and unexpected loss of my son Amen, who was a proud member of this community.

“We are all still in shock and none of us are ready to fully comprehend this devastating loss.

“Despite the overwhelming sadness, we are comforted by the outpouring of love and support.

“Amen was a remarkable young man, loved by everyone who knew him, and it breaks our hearts that such a tragedy has occurred. This should not happen to anyone.”
