A Glasgow to London train that derailed after “hitting a landslide” at 80mph has caused a second day of disruption for passengers.

Emergency services worked to get passengers off the train safely after the incident in Cumbria on Monday morning.

Avanti West Coast said its 4.28am service from Glasgow to Euston came off the tracks at 6.10am near the village of Shap, which is on the West Coast Main Line.

85 passengers plus train staff on board were evacuated from the train. Four people suffered “minor injuries”.

The incident is likely to cause disruption “for a number of days”, Avanti West Coast said. They urged customers not to travel further north than Preston on Tuesday.

The company said in a statement: “Avanti West Coast customers should not attempt to travel north of Preston on Monday 3 or Tuesday November 4, as recovery work is ongoing to restore the infrastructure between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District after a train derailment on Monday November 3.

“Destinations north of Preston include Blackpool, Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Glasgow, Haymarket and Edinburgh.

“We will continue to update our website with further information, but it is likely there will be significant disruption to this part of our network for a number of days.”

Those with tickets for the route dated Monday or Tuesday will be able to use them at no extra cost between Wednesday and Friday.

Tickets will also be accepted on alternative routes with some other train operators.

Sam MacDougall, director of operations at Network Rail, told a news conference on Monday early indications would suggest that the train struck a landslide at around 80mph.

The area where the landslide occurred has been experiencing “significant adverse weather conditions,” the operator said.

Network Rail engineers are working with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) to fully determine the cause.

The derailment has blocked the opposite line, and no trains will run between Preston and Carlisle throughout Tuesday.

Phil James, North West Route Director for Network Rail, said: “We want to thank passengers for their patience while we have investigated this extremely complex incident.

“Now that the RAIB staff have finished their investigation our team can begin the work of reopening the railway. We will need to move the train before we begin the repair work necessary to get services moving safely as soon as possible.

“This incident will continue to cause disruption for the rest of the day and we’re urging passengers to check with their train operator or National Rail Enquiries for the latest information.”

First Minister John Swinney said on X on Monday: “Very concerned by the news from Cumbria this morning about the derailment of a train from Glasgow.

“Ministers are being kept up to date in developments and the efforts to support all affected.”
