Officers say around 11.20am on Saturday, the door of a property on Canal Street was set on fire.
Emergency services attended, the fire was extinguished, and there were no reports of injuries.
Following enquiries, police say the incident is now being treated as attempted murder.
Detective Constable Neil McGregor said: “This reckless, deliberate act of setting fire to the door of the property could have had far worse consequences and it’s vital we trace whoever is responsible.
“Extensive CCTV and door-to-door enquiries are being carried out by officers, but I’m appealing for the public’s help as part of our investigation.
“Were you in the area at the time and saw anyone acting suspiciously? Did you see anyone running away or a vehicle leaving the scene? If you have any information, please contact us.
“I’d ask anyone who lives in the area with private CCTV, doorbell or dash-cam footage to also review this for anything significant.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 1252 of May 2.
