Douglas Macarthur named as man found dead after being hit by lorry in Oban

A man who was found dead at the side of the road in Oban after being hit by a lorry has been remembered as a “much-loved” uncle and brother.

Douglas Macarthur, more commonly known as Doc, was discovered on the A85 in the Pennyfuir area around 2am on June 27.

The 59-year-old had been involved in a crash with an HGV in the George Street area a short time before being discovered.

Douglas’s family said they have been “positively touched” by the support offered to them by the local community.

In a statement released by Police Scotland, they said: “The family is positively touched by all the messages of condolences and personal tributes to their much-loved brother and uncle.

“Doc (as he was more commonly known) was obviously held in high regard throughout the local community and beyond, who are united in grief.”

Police have confirmed the HGV and driver were later traced and that enquiries into the incident are “ongoing”.

Inspector Roy McCarney, from the Dumbarton Road Policing Unit, added: “Our thoughts are with Douglas’ family and friends at this difficult time. Officers continue to offer support as our investigations progress.

“Enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances. I’d ask anyone with information, who has not already spoken to police, to please come forward.

“Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident 0255 of Thursday, June 27, 2024.”
