A teenage driver who put two people in hospital after a horror smash has been ordered to do 250 hours of unpaid work.

Abderahmene Naimi, then 19, crashed head on with Amanda Smith’s vehicle in Glasgow’s Scotstounhill on January 28 2022.

Naimi, now 21, failed to see the 56-year-old’s car while he overtook a bus on a road with a blind summit ahead of it.

The crash caused extensive damage to both vehicles and landed Miss Smith as well as Naimi’s passenger Mohammed Abrar in hospital.

Miss Smith suffered bruising to her abdomen and a large haematoma.

Mr Abrar meantime sustained a knee fracture as well as tissue damage to his shoulder and back.

Naimi pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to causing serious injury and injury by dangerous driving.

He also admitted a separate charge of driving without insurance.

Sheriff Shona Gilroy tagged Naimi for 80 days keeping him indoors between 10pm and 6am as well as imposing the unpaid work hours.

Naimi was also disqualified from driving for 16 months.

The court heard that Naimi – who was behind the wheel of a Peugeot 208 – was travelling near Queen Victoria Drive around midnight with three passengers in his vehicle.

Miss Smith was going in the opposite direction towards a blind summit on the road.

Prosecutor Danielle McGuinness said: “Whilst within the area of solid white lines, which are visible and last for approximately 40 metres, Naimi has crossed onto the wrong side of the road whilst overtaking a First bus which was in front of him.

“This has given him no view over the summit.

“As Naimi reached the blind summit on the wrong side of the road, he has struck Miss Smith’s vehicle head on, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.”

The road was closed for several hours while all five from both cars were taken to hospital.

Miss Smith was discharged after four days having suffered the abdomen bruising and haematoma.

Miss McGuinness added: “Mr Abrar was found to have sustained a fracture to his left knee and tissue damage to his right shoulder and lower back.

“He was operated on and required an orthopaedic plate and screw fixation.

“He required an extension splint for 2 weeks.”

He was also discharged after four days but was re-admitted 10 days later for a further operation.

Mr Abrar has been left permanently scarred on his kneecap as a result of the injury.

Officers found that despite Naimi, of the city’s Finnieston, owning the car, he had no insurance to drive it.
