Drivers have been urged to use alternative routes as firefighters continue to battle a blaze at a building in Wishaw.

Emergency services were called to reports of a fire at Stewarton Street at around 2.27pm on Wednesday.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Services dispatched six fire engines to the scene where firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze.

One person was treated by Scottish Ambulance Service crews.

Police Scotland confirmed nearby buildings have also been evacuated as a precaution.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Stewarton Street in Wishaw is closed between East Academy Street and Graham Street due to a fire which was reported around 2.30pm.

“Nearby buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.

“Driver are urged to use alternative routes.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.27pm on Wednesday, December 4 to reports of a building on fire at Stewarton Street, Wishaw.

“Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances to the scene where firefighters are working to extinguish a fire affecting a building.

“One casualty is in the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews are still in attendance.”
