A drunk man accelerated down a one-way city centre street and narrowly avoided hitting police officers.

Steven Hosie, 37, drove dangerously on Glasgow’s Queen Street on July 3, 2021.

He refused to stop for two officers on the road who had to take evasive action to avoid being struck.

He had earlier driven against the flow of traffic of the one-way road and almost hit two cars heading towards him.

Hosie pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving and a separate charge of drink driving.

The court heard Hosie drove past a no entry sign from Ingram Street into Queen Street which is a one way system.

Hosie “drove against the flow of traffic” and almost struck two vehicles that were coming towards him.

Numerous pedestrians were also in the area at the time.

Prosecutor Gemma Barclay said: “Two officers attempted to approach the vehicle and were wearing hi-vis body armour.

“They signalled for the vehicle to stop but they required to take evasive action.

“The vehicle had accelerated at them causing them to move away.”

A third officer further down the road used his baton to strike Hosie’s windscreen.

Hosie stopped and, after a brief attempt to escape, was arrested.

He was tested and found to have 97.8 microgrammes in his breath when the legal limit is 22 microgrammes.

Greg Cunningham, defending, told the sentencing: “It was very bad driving and even worse decision making.

“He is embarrassed and ashamed.”

It was revealed that Hosie has a previous conviction of driving without insurance from 2017.

Sheriff Bernard Ablett said: “This was a serious offence of dangerous driving – I am going to impose a community payback order.”

The dad-of-one, of the city’s Cardonald, was ordered to do 180 hours of unpaid work and disqualified from driving for 20 months.
