Residents were told to leave their homes in Hamilton during the early hours of Tuesday morning due to reports of an unsafe building.

Emergency services were called to Quarry Street at around 12.40am and evacuated a number of properties as a precaution.

South Lanarkshire Council confirmed the decision was made due to the structural integrity of a building.

Officers have closed the road between Low Waters Road and Graham Street, and locals have been urged to avoid the area.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.40am on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, we received a report of an unsafe building on Quarry Street, Hamilton.

“A number of properties have been evacuated as a precaution.

“The road is closed and members of the public are being advised to avoid the area.”

The local authority provided support to the affected residents of the privately owned properties.

A spokesman said: “Council officers attended Quarry Street overnight at the request of Police Scotland, who evacuated eight flats over concerns about the structural integrity of a building.

“As a result of this, the street was closed between Low Waters Road and Graham Street, with diversions put in place. That section of Quarry Street will remain closed while structural checks are carried out. Support was provided to the residents who were evacuated.”
