Eight in hospital after roof of double-decker bus torn off in crash with bridge

Emergency services attended the scene of the collision in Kilmarnock at around 2pm on Thursday.

Eight people were taken to hospital after a double-decker bus had its roof torn off after crashing into a railway bridge in East Ayrshire.

Emergency services were called to the collision on Culzean Crescent, in Kilmarnock, at around 2pm on Thursday.

Police confirmed that eight people were taken to University Hospital Crosshouse as a result of the crash. There were no serious injuries.

Stagecoach confirmed people were left injured after the six service, which runs from Kilmarnock Bus Station to New Farm Loch, struck a low bridge.

In a video, people can be seen on the exposed top deck of the Stagecoach bus. Several ambulances, including three special operations response teams, and police vehicles are at the scene.

The incident comes after a double decker bus crashed into a railway bridge in Glasgow in Saturday.

Five were taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment where one person is said to be in a critical condition.

Culzean Crescent reopened at around 5.30pm.

Police Scotland issued an update at around 9pm on Thursday, saying: “Officers were called to a crash involving a double decker bus on Culzean Crescent in Kilmarnock around 1.55pm today.

“Eight passengers were taken to hospital. There are no reports of serious injuries.

“Enquiries are ongoing into the collision. The road reopened around 5.30pm.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 13:55 to attend an incident on Culzean Crescent, Kilmarnock.

“One ambulance and three special operations response teams (SORT) were dispatched to the scene and four patients were transported to University Hospital Crosshouse.”

Stagecoach has been approached for comment.

Councillor Barry Douglas posted on Facebook, warning locals to stay away from the scene.

He wrote: “Please avoid the area around Holehouse Road/Culzean Crescent/Macphail Drive as a bus has struck the low railway bridge from MacPhail Drive onto Holehouse Road/ Culzean Crescent

“I hope everyone on the bus and any pedestrians in the area are ok and that there are no injuries as a result of the accident.

“I would urge anyone travelling by train heading south to Auchinleck/New Cumnock/Carlisle or returning to Kilmarnock by train to check with ScotRail to ensure the trains are running incase bridge inspection works that may be necessary lead to cancellations or delays.”

One local said that when they heard the crash, themselves and other neighbours ran to the aid of the bus passengers.

They said: “This afternoon we heard a loud crash. It was the bus coming through the tunnel over there, and when I came outside to check, the roof of the bus had came off with the kids and stuff inside of it.

“Myself and neighbours around the area were all out before the paramedics arrived. There was a couple of kids hurt, but no one to serious, but we waited with them until the professionals got here. My next door neighbour is actually a nurse, so she had towels and stuff like that to help.

“She led by example and was a real superhero.”

Another neighbour said: “Whoevers driving the bus, has got the wrong bridge. I think it’s human error.”

A fellow local said: “I’m just so glad the kids are okay. Its shocking for the town for that to happen.”

A Stagecoach West Scotland spokesperson said: “We can confirm there has been an incident involving one of our buses in Kilmarnock this afternoon (19/12/24).

“The 6 service, which runs from Kilmarnock Bus Station to New Farm Loch, struck a low bridge. We are aware of two people who were injured and are currently being treated by emergency services.

“Investigations are ongoing and we are working closely with Police Scotland.”

ScotRail said no services are currently impacted.
