The family of a “miracle” teenager who has endured 30 brain surgeries are making a plea for help as she travels to London to see a specialist.
Aimee Nicholl from Glasgow is bedbound due to a brain condition she has lived with since she was born three months premature.
Her family say she has been fighting for her life ever since, after battling E.coli and meningitis as a newborn.
She then developed hydrocephalus and needed emergency brain surgery.
GoFundMeThree years ago, Aimee developed low-pressure brain symptoms and has to remain in bed almost all of the time. She has two shunt devices implanted in her brain.
Lying completely flat is the only relief she gets from head pain, sickness, dizziness and the off-balance feeling that comes the moment she tries to sit or stand.
She hasn’t been to school in two years and has “no normal teenage life, no independence, no time with friends”, her family said.
Aimee has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures in Glasgow, many of which the family say have come with complications.
Now, she is travelling with her mum, Karina, and dad, Chris, to London after being referred to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Her sister Abbie said: “This means more procedures, more hospital stays, and more pain for her body, all in the hope of giving her a better quality of life.
“Due to the family stress of what Aimee will undergo during her time in London, we are aiming to minimise as much of the stress in other areas.”
GoFundMeThe family are raising funds to help cover the cost of travel and accommodation for her parents to be by her side in London. More than £2,800 has already been raised.
Abbie said: “Thirty times our family has kissed her forehead, handed her to surgeons, and waited in fear and hope for her to come back to us.
“And every single time, she has shown strength beyond her years.”
She added: “For 17 years, Aimee has fought every single day. My mum and dad have fought right beside her. They will never stop. But right now, they need a little extra help.
“So many of you have watched Aimee grow. You’ve celebrated her milestones. You’ve called her our miracle, and she truly is.
“We are praying that the specialist professor neurosurgeon can perform a miracle and give her a chance of having days like this again.”
