Family of Scots teen Ryan Bennet who died in Zante quad bike crash pay tribute to 'beloved' young man

The family of a teenager killed in a quad bike crash while on holiday in Greece have paid tribute to a “beloved” son and nephew.

Ryan Bennet was rushed to a hospital on the island of Zakynthos after his all terrain vehicle (ATV) left the road at low speed in the early hours of the morning on July 7, but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The 18-year-old, from West Dunbartonshire, was described as a “well mannered young gentleman” who was “loved by everyone” by uncle Craig Duncan after a fundraising page set up to help bring his body home shattered its target in a matter of hours.

Ryan’s family now plan to lay him to rest in Scotland at a private ceremony.

Craig told STV News: “Our beloved Ryan Bennet who was 18 years old tragically lost his life in a quad bike accident on the Greek Island of Zante in the early hours of July 7.

“We’re absolutely devastated at the loss of such a well mannered young gentleman who is loved by everyone lucky enough to know him.

“We have raised enough funds to bring Ryan home so he can be laid to rest here in Scotland.”

He added: “On behalf of Dougie [Ryan’s dad], Iwona and family we would like to thank everyone for the kind words and support at this difficult time.”

Ryan was travelling with another young man between the beach destinations of Alikanas and Gerakas at the time of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle.

Both were wearing helmets at the time of the incident, but the passenger sustained only minor injuries.

A JustGiving page started to support Ryan’s family set a target of £10,000 on Saturday, but had smashed through the £11,000 mark with 18 hours.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”
