Tributes to 'devoted' grandfather hit by car as investigation into death continues

Police are investigating the death of William Cherry, 74, who was found seriously injured at the side of a road in Baillieston.

The family of a retired bus driver who died after being hit by a car in Baillieston have paid tribute to the “devoted grandfather”.

William Cherry was pronounced dead at the scene after being found seriously injured on Maxwell Street, near its junction with Main Street, around 5.50pm on December 5.

Following a postmortem examination, it was established that the 74-year-old died after being struck by a vehicle.

Investigations into the incident remain ongoing, but police say they are following a positive line of enquiry.

Mr Cherry’s family have remembered him as a “devoted father and grandfather”.

In a statement, they said: “He was known for his friendly nature, long walks with his dog Milo, and for helping others.

“A local man and retired bus driver, with a heart of gold and described by many as a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed by many.”

Officers have urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or a vehicle driving dangerously in the area to come forward.

Detective sergeant Graham Clarke said: “Our thoughts remain with William’s family and friends at this very difficult time, and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“We now know that William died as a result of being struck by a car, and I’d ask that anyone in the local area please think back to whether they witnessed a crash or a vehicle driving dangerously that evening.

“I’d also ask that people review their private CCTV and dash-cam footage to see if it has captured anything of significance that could assist with our investigation.
