Fans warned to stay away from planned protest at Celtic Park

Police are warning football fans not to attend a planned protest outside Celtic Park this weekend.

The force said it was aware of a proposed demonstration due to take place on Sunday, one week on from when Hoops fans clashed with police officers following their team’s 2-0 League Cup defeat by Ross County.

Celtic players and staff had to be escorted from the stadium, with the club later condemning the violent scenes.

Manager Neil Lennon could hear the angry chants calling for his resignation from inside the stadium.

A man has since been charged with disorder-related offences and is due to appear in court at a later date.

Glasgow is currently under level four of the Scottish Government’s Covid-19 restrictions, so protests and similar events are prohibited.

In response to the new demonstration, the force is instead urging supporters to find alternative ways to demonstrate, such as online, to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Chief superintendent Mark Sutherland said: “We are aware of a proposed demonstration outside Celtic Park on Sunday, December 6, and would urge people to find alternative ways to protest, such as online, to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“The Scottish Government regulations are quite clear that these types of protest are prohibited in areas under level four restrictions.

“Officers will continue to police these types of event using the 4Es (engage, explain, encourage, enforce) approach of engaging with those taking part and explaining the restrictions in place to save lives.

“Our response will be measured and appropriate but we will use enforcement where required.”
