Investigation into the deaths of three babies in Lanarkshire to begin at Glasgow Sheriff Court

A fatal accident inquiry (FAI) into the deaths of three babies in Lanarkshire will begin on Tuesday.

Leo Lamont, Ellie McCormick, and Mira-Belle Bosch are all said to have died in “circumstances giving rise to serious public concern”.

Leo was born on February 15, 2019, Ellie on March 4, 2019, and Mirabelle on July 2, 2021.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has confirmed that the FAI will begin on January 9 at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Members of the families will be present at the inquiry as well as representatives for NHS Lanarkshire, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

The purpose of an FAI includes determining the cause of death, the circumstances in which the death occurred, and to establish what reasonable precautions could have been taken to avoid deaths in similar circumstances.

Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks, who leads on death investigations for COPFS, said: “Following a detailed investigation, the Procurator Fiscal decided that it was in the public interest to hold a discretionary joint Fatal Accident Inquiry to look at the full circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of Leo Lamont, Ellie McCormick, and Mira-belle Bosch and hopefully help avoid such deaths happening again.

“The families will continue to be updated as the Inquiry progresses.”

The family of Mira-Belle were praised after they raised £5,000 to pay for legal advice in 2022.

Dad Eckhardt Bosch said: “I am pleased to say that we have reached our target. Thank you for all the donations.

“We are overwhelmed with the support. We have been advised not to give any further public updates regarding the case.

“This is understandable, in light of the complexity and sensitivity of the matter.”
