Traffic lights at a major intersection in the west end of Glasgow have been knocked out by a major underground fault.

The signals on Great Western Road at the junction with Byres Road and Queen Margaret Drive will remain off “until further notice”.

The lights failed on Friday at around 10.45am after a serious issue with an underground cable.

Glasgow City Council said the traffic signals would have to remain off until contractors could perform repairs on what is one of the city’s busiest roads.

A notice from the council said: “Further updates will be issued when more information becomes available.”

In August, an early morning power spike caused traffic signals across the city region to fail. Each set had to be manually restored by engineers.

In June, another large power spike in Glasgow early on a Saturday morning caused more than 20 traffic signals to fail.
