Final vaccines administered at Hydro ahead of COP26

The final vaccinations to be administered at Glasgow’s Hydro have taken place, as the venue prepares to host the COP26 summit later this year.

The venue, which carried out up to 5000 vaccinations a day, has operated as a vaccine centre since April following the closure of the NHS Louisa Jordan.

The Hydro, which forms part of the Scottish Event Campus, will now prepare to welcome thousands of delegates for the UN climate change conference running from October 31 to November 12.

Health secretary Humza Yousaf said that Scotland has done “exceptionally well” in terms of vaccinating the population.

“Clearly the more people we have vaccinated the better our protection is and Scotland has done exceptionally well in some metrics, in fact by all metrics, we are world leading,” he said.

“We are in the top five in terms of percentage of the population that has been vaccinated.”

The news comes as Scotland recorded 1735 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday.

Overall, 3,976,022 people have now received the first dose of the vaccination and 2,966,054 have had their second dose.

The Scottish Government said that by the end of Sunday, all over 18s who have attended a scheduled appointment will have received their first coronavirus vaccine.

It is expected all adults in the country will have had their second jab by Sunday September 12.
