Firefighters have rushed to a large blaze near a historic former cinema in Glasgow’s south side.

Nine appliances and 40 firefighters were dispatched to Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands after the fire broke out shortly before 7pm on Tuesday evening.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service told STV News that it received a call from a member of the public at 6.59pm.

The building on fire is believed to be derelict, the fire service said.

It is unclear whether the building on fire is the former home of the White Elephant cinema, or one nearby.

A section of the road in both directions between Pollokshaws Road and Coustonholm Road is closed to traffic and drivers are being urged to avoid the area.

A police diversion is also in place.

Nearby businesses in the area have been evacuated as crews work to contain the fire.

Police Scotland said that it was called around 7.15pm to assist with traffic management.

There have been no reported injuries as a result of the blaze.
