Fire crews have warned children to stay away from an “extremely dangerous” building which was ravaged by a fire in North Lanarkshire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service put out a safety alert over the weekend after youths were “drawn to the site via social media”.

The warning comes after crews battled a blaze at a derelict building on Hartwood Road in Shotts during the early hours of Friday morning.

SFRS sent four engines and a specialist vehicle to the scene.

Those living nearby were told to keep their windows and doors shut.

On Saturday evening, SFRS issued a warning on social media, stating the building is extremely dangerous, unstable and contains hazardous asbestos.

“Do not approach or enter the area,” the alert said.

“It’s unsafe, and there’s a serious risk of injury.

“We’ve heard that youths are being drawn to the site via social media.”
