A fire that tore through a newly opened restaurant in South Lanarkshire on Wednesday was “not suspicious”, say police.

Emergency services were called to Westwood Square, East Kilbride, at around 5.30pm following reports of a blaze above the Orient restaurant.

Redcliffe Drive was closed by officers before being reopened at around 8pm.

The fire was extinguished and police confirmed no one was injured during the incident.

Glass, a nearby beauty salon, posted on social media saying: “Thank you all so so much for the messages to make sure we’re all safe and sound and the salon wasn’t affected.

“Unfortunately, there was a fire above the Orient out the back that caught fire to the wooden Westwood dental practice sign.

“Thankfully, everyone is safe and sound, and hopefully, the damage isn’t too bad.”

A police spokesperson added: “Around 5.30pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, we were made aware of a fire at a business premises in Westwood Square, East Kilbride. 

“Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“There were no reported injuries and the fire is not suspicious.”
