Fire which 'significantly damaged' historic Glasgow hotel treated as 'deliberate' as police open probe

A fire which ripped through a historic hotel in Glasgow is being treated as deliberate.

Police say they believe the blaze at the derelict former Carnbooth House Hotel in Carmunnock on Thursday, August 17 was started on purpose after significant damage was caused to the building.

The country house, built by architect Alexander Cullen in the early 1900s, has been empty for almost five years and was previously used as a school.

There were no injuries following the fire but officers are treating it as an instance of “wilful fire raising”.

The blaze was later extinguished by fire crews.

Detective Constable Declan Quinn-Thomas, of Aitkenhead Road CID, said: “This was a significant fire and thankfully no one was injured.

“I would urge anyone with any information to make contact with police.

“Think back, did you see or hear anything suspicious or unusual in the area that evening? Perhaps you have private CCTV or dash-cam footage that could assist with our enquiries? If so, please get in touch.”
