Firefighters have been tackling a blaze at a farm in Lanark overnight, with roads closed.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a fire at a farm on Edinburgh Road in Carnwath in Lanark around 6.48pm on Thursday.

Three appliances were sent at the height of the blaze to a fire affecting a large quantity of hay bales.

Nearby residents are asked to close their windows and doors as a precaution due a large plume of smoke.

Two appliances remain at the scene as of 7am on Friday, with a section of the A70 Edinburgh Road at the roundabout with Main St and Caldwell Terrace closed.

South Lanarkshire Council said on social media that a police diversion is in place.

There are no reported casualties, crews said.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 6.48pm on Thursday, 9 April, to reports of a fire at a farm on Edinburgh Road in Carnwath, Lanark.

“Three fire appliances are currently at the scene and firefighters are working to extinguish a fire affecting a large quantity of hay bales.

“Nearby residents are asked to close their windows and doors as a precaution due to a large smoke plume.

“There are no reported casualties and crews from two appliances remain at the scene.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “The A70, Edinburgh Road, is closed at the mini roundabout junction with Carnwath Road due to a report of a fire at a farm which we received around 8pm on Thursday, 9 April, 2026.

“There is a diversion in place out of Carnwath, towards Braehead and Forth, and then motorists can continue on towards Edinburgh.

“Alternatively, motorists can continue up Carnwath Road towards Newbigging and Elsrickle, and then turn left onto Edinburgh Road towards Dolphinton.
