Engineers have repaired a gas main after a “significant gas escape” in Cumbernauld.

On Friday afternoon, SGN said a cordon had been put in place at the site near Lye Brae, with the road also closed in both directions.

The gas network also insisted no fireworks were to be set off by anyone living within the exclusion zone due to safety reasons, ahead of any potential displays planned today and this evening.

On Friday evening, SGN said the gas leak had been stopped and the exclusion zone had been lifted.

A statement read: “Our engineers have made substantial progress this evening with the first stage of the repair.

“We’ve stopped the major leak and the exclusion zone has been lifted.

“We still have some essential works which we’ll be undertaking over the next week during which time the road closures will need to remain in place.”
