Fishmonger stocks toilet roll in bid to ease coronavirus fears

The Milngavie shop is selling the product at cost price amid stockpiling panic.

A Milngavie fishmonger is stocking toilet roll and long-lasting UHT milk in a bid to reassure local shoppers worried about a shortage of domestic products due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Andre Alexander from Fantoosh Fish says there’s been a great response from customers.

“(There’s been) a few quizzical looks at times, you know, ‘what toilet roll in the fish shop’ but in these times it seemed the right thing to do,” he said.

“We’re the community fishmonger and we realised all of the supermarkets were running out of toilet roll over the weekend, so as a community-minded gesture, we managed to get hold of some toilet roll from wholesalers and now we’re selling it at cost-price,” he added.

Alexander said the move was prompted by scenes of panic-buying at supermarkets in the local area, adding that many of the products have gone to the local foodbank for redistribution.

The latest Scottish Government update, published on Friday afternoon, show that 85 people have now been diagnosed with coronavirus in Scotland.
