Flats blocks built in Greenock with unsafe RAAC to be demolished

Blocks of flats in Greenock are to be demolished after being found to contain potentially dangerous reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).

The four-storey blocks on Belville Street, known locally as The Stilts, contain dozens of homes.

River Clyde Homes (RCH) has confirmed residents have been told that demolition of all seven blocks is the only “financially viable option” following extensive technical assessments.

It comes after RAAC was first discovered in five of the blocks in 2024.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has previously warned that the concrete is now beyond its intended lifespan and could “collapse with no notice”.

An RCH spokesperson said: “We understand that this is an extremely difficult and unsettling situation, particularly for homeowners who face uncertainty about their housing situation and financial circumstances.

“Following extensive technical assessments and consideration of all available options, we have written to those affected and are meeting with residents to ensure they have the opportunity to discuss the issues raised, and for us to answer questions directly.”

The organisation has not yet provided further details on when the demolition could take place or what arrangements will be made for homeowners affected by the decision.

Residents are now being invited to meet with RCH to discuss the situation, with a meeting due to take place on Tuesday evening.

The statement added: “While we understand people do not want to leave their homes, it would be premature to speculate on specific outcomes before we have had the opportunity to meet residents and discuss matters with them directly.

“RCH are also working closely with Inverclyde Council and other stakeholders regarding the situation. We recognise the pressures on housing locally and will continue to work constructively with all agencies to support residents throughout this process.”
