Fly-tipper fined after cars chopped up and dumped on Govanhill street

A fly-tipper has been fined for dumping chopped-up cars with visible number plates in Govanhill.

A number of pieces of broken vehicles appeared on Bankhall Street in October, causing concern among residents.

Pieces were found abandoned beside bins or stuffed inside.

The culprit has since been identified and handed a fixed penalty notice of £500 by Glasgow City Council.

Govanhill has emerged as the worst area in Glasgow for flytipping, and now four new CCTV cameras are being installed to tackle the scourge.

Local councillor Soryia Siddique, who reported the discarded motor parts to the council, said: “Dumping cars on streets is dangerous, unsightly and completely unacceptable.

“A £500 penalty for fly-tipping vehicles sends a clear message: if you disrespect the area, there will be consequences.

“The residents of Govanhill deserve a clean and green area.

“However, there must be a sustained campaign with adequate resources to eradicate the blight of fly-tipping in Govanhill. The blight of fly tipping impacts the quality of life of residents in the area.”

Commenting on the high levels of flytipping in Govanhill, a council spokesman said: ”We have street cleaning resources working in Govanhill every day, and we can respond quickly to incidents that are reported to us.

“We are also currently installing four new CCTV cameras in Govanhill to help tackle fly-tipping and other forms of anti-social behaviour after funding was allocated by the local area partnership committee.

“Much of the illegal dumping in Govanhill is committed by people from the area, and so information from the community will help us to tackle this issue.”
