Former Glasgow boxer who raped and abused three women jailed for 14 years

A former boxer who abused three women and subjected his victims to terrifying physical and sexual violence has been jailed for 14 years.

Jonathan Slowey was convicted after the survivors spoke out against him during a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

The 35-year-old denied the majority of the accusations against him, claiming the women and police had conspired against him.

But, he was found guilty of 14 charges including the rape of each victim.

He committed the crimes between 2012 and 2023 in Glasgow’s East End, East Dunbartonshire and Aberdeen.

Slowey – once banned from boxing in 2016 for testing positive for cocaine – was also ordered to be supervised for a further four years on his release.

Judge Bruce Erroch KC stated: “All three women have spoken of the lasting psychological and emotional harm from what you did to them.

“You deny all sexual offending and say all of them colluded with one another.”

‘Cocktail of fear and submission’

Jurors were told how the ex-fighter created “a cocktail of fear and submission” for the women.

This involved “sickening” verbal abuse escalating to “terrifying” physical violence, and Slowey preying on them sexually.

Slowey was said to have been initially fine with each of the victims.

But, in her closing speech, prosecutor Kath Harper KC explained: “How quickly the possessive jealousy of Jonathan Slowey took hold.

“He subjected them to constant accusations of cheating. He took control of their movements, who they were with, checked their phones, wore down their self-esteem,and called them horrid names.

“He isolated them from friends and relatives – the family (of two of the women) desperately tried to stop what was happening.

“They could see the deterioration in their loved one, but could not get through to them.”

The court heard the women were “worn down” by how Slowey tormented them.

Slowey also yanked out one victim’s hair extensions in a rage.

Jurors were shown photos of the same woman’s horrific facial injuries after suffering at Slowey’s violent hands.

The court heard how victims were left so scared of him that they felt they had to agree to his demands – and he raped them.

In his evidence, Slowey claimed any sexual contact was consensual.

The advocate depute told jurors he appeared “outraged” that the women had “come to this court and lied”.

She added it was his belief that the survivors had all “colluded” against him and that the police were also part of any alleged plot.
