A historic Glasgow former school is to be transformed into 24 flats in the Parkhead area.
Newlands School, which was built in 1895 on Springfield Road, closed in the 1970s and has most recently been used as health and social care offices.
Housing Association Wheatley Group plans to convert the school’s classrooms into flats offering a mixture of five, four, three and two bedroom homes if planning permission is granted.
The properties will be available for mid market rent, which is more expensive than social housing leases but cheaper than private market rates.
A design statement says 24 homes will “be arranged within the former classrooms around the central atrium”.
It adds: “The overarching principle of the proposals it to retain as much of the original character and layout of the school building as possible. Structural intervention has been kept to a minimum both to preserve original features and to keep control of costs.”
Also forming part of proposals is an internal community space.
The design statement says: “There is opportunity to preserve the historic building fabric of the area and repurpose a significant building to local community. The proposals provide a secure, costed, and sustainable future for the building which otherwise may have been lost to deterioration and ultimately dereliction.”
The former playground and car park are to be transformed into garden areas with plants and walking paths.
Proposals also include 24 parking spaces as well as cycle storage.
The planning application is under consideration by the council.
